Rikki-Tikki-Tavi

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is the story of a mongoose who becomes the guardian of a family of British citizens living in a bungalow in India. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, named for the chittering sound Mongooses make when alert, fights his natural enemies, the cobras Nag and Nagaina, in order to protect the family. The mongoose slays Nag, then employs a plot to distract the grieving Nagaina so that he can destroy her eggs and tempt her into a self-destructive battle that ends in her death. He becomes the family's permanent protector.
