Dry September

Dry September by William Faulkner

Dry September is the story of a mob organizing itself in a Mississippi town with an aim toward lynching a local black watchman, Will Mayes. Mayes is accused, albeit unclearly and with evidence to support the claim, of having committed a nebulous slight against a white woman, Minnie Cooper. Led by local bigwig John McLendon, the mob is soon incited out of control and hangs Mayes without bothering to learn what actually happened.
