The Outsider is the story of Meursault, an apathetic Algerian Frenchman who is unable to feel empathy. Meursault sits uncaring through his mother's funeral, then goes with a girlfriend to the summer home of a friend, Raymond, who is being antagonized by the Arab acquaintances of a woman he beat and brutalized with Meursault's abetment. Meursault, suffering from heat stroke, fatally shoots one of the Arabs and is jailed and finally sentenced to death by the guillotine.
