The Third Man is the story of Western genre author Holly Martins on a trip to Allied-occupied Vienna. Believing that his friend Harry Lime has offered him employment, Martins is shocked to find that Lime is dead, killed in a car crash. Martins swiftly becomes entangled with actress Anna Schmidt and with Lime's shady friends. Investigating Lime's murder he comes upon inconsistencies in accounts of the number of men who carried the dead or dying Lime from the street. Some claim two did so, while others suggest a mysterious third.
