The Marrow of Tradition is a 1901 novel about the 1898 Wilmington Race Riot in North Carolina. The novel tells the story of a white suprematist group's massacre of blacks and their subsequent rise to power. The story follows several plots: Major Carteret, a powerful white man who conspires with others to gain control, William Miller, a black doctor who helps to prevent a lynching and Campbell, who also helps Miller and is saved in the end. The novel deals with themes of justice, racism and power.
