Woyzeck

Woyzeck by Georg Buchner

In the incomplete play Woyzeck, the title character kills Marie, his wife, because he learns that she's been unfaithful to him with a drum major. The play takes a close look at how a life of poverty can cause unnecessary suffering. It also offers a critique of a social system that ignores or profits from the suffering of others. Woyzeck sees visions and hears voices, but his doctor treats him not as a patient but as a specimen in an experiment.
