A Long Way Gone is the memoir of former child soldier Ishmael Beah, a native of Sierra Leone who was kidnapped as a boy into that country's bloody civil war. Separated from his family, Beah was forced into a martial cult of violence and drug use and subjected to brutal brainwashing techniques. Beah discusses his past frankly and uses it to discuss self-forgiveness, the malleability of children, and the terrors of war.
