The Maids Study Guide

The Maids

The Maids by Jean Genet

In the play The Maids, Solange and Claire, two sisters who work as housemaids, dream of killing their mistress, Madame. The pair regularly act out scenarios in which they kill Madame, with one of them playing the role of the mistress each time. The play explores what it means to be an outcast from society. Through their fantasies, the two maids are able to get a taste of power that they are otherwise unable to obtain.
