Child of the Dark by Carolina Maria de Jesus

Child of the Dark is the name given to the published journals of Carolina Maria de Jesus, a black Brazilian peasant who grew up in a favela in the first half of the twentieth century. The journals give many insights into life in a favela and focus on Carolina's real neighbors and the lives they led. It also exposes the political corruption, intense squalor, and other detrimental conditions present in her home, Minas Gerais.
