Kira-Kira

Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata

Kira-Kira is a novel by Cynthia Kadohata about a Japanese-American girl named Katie and her family. After moving to Georgia, Katie has only Lynn, her sister, as a friend. Eventually Lynn is diagnosed with lymphoma and Sammy, their brother, is injured by an animal trap. After much distress, Lynn dies and the family falls into grief, though Katie comes to understand the optimistic philosophical meaning of "kira-kira," a word she and her sister used to use to describe sparkling things in life.
