Affinity is a historical novel by Sarah Waters, published in 1999. Set in 1870s Victorian England, the novel follows Margaret Prior, an unmarried aristocratic woman who has fallen into deep depression after her father's death and her attempted suicide. The story follows her struggle for autonomy over her mother and her experiences as a visitor and mentor in a women's prison. The novel deals with themes of the role of women, loss, romantic versus Platonic love and the possibility of redemption.
