A Long Way from Chicago is a short story cycle by Richard Peck. The stories involve the grandmother of Mary Alice and Joey Dowdel, who spend their summers with her. Grandma is a nutty and daring lady who is not afraid to get revenge or break the law. In one story, "The Mouse in the Milk," Grandma hatches a plan to catch some boys trying to steal from her and threatens to ruin their milk delivery business. In "A One-Woman Crime Wave," Grandma steals the sheriff's boat to go fishing.
