Oroonoko: An Authoritative Text Historical Backgrounds Criticism by Aphra Behn

Inspired by the author's experience in Surinam in the 17th century, Oroonoko is a short novel that offers a criticism of slavery and colonialism. Prince Oroonoko is in love with Imoinda and marries her. His grandfather, the king, also falls in love with Imoinda and has her join his harem of wives. Oroonoko and Imoinda meet to continue their love affair and are caught. Both are ultimately sold into slavery. Considered one of the earliest novels in English, Oroonoko is also the first to feature a female narrator.
