Spartacus

Spartacus by Howard Fast

Spartacus is a historical novel written in 1951 by Howard Fast. The book tells the story of Spartacus' slave revolt in Ancient Rome and is told from the distant perspective of Roman aristocrats like Crassus and Gracchus, as well as from the slaves' perspective in the present tense. The book presents freedom and hope as integral to man's survival. For Fast, these themes took on a personal significance, as he had self-published the novel himself from prison, after being charged with his involvement in the Communist Party.
