Blackberrying Study Guide

Blackberrying by Sylvia Plath

Blackberrying is a poem by American poet and author Sylvia Plath. It deals with an unnamed narrator's berry-picking outing and with an allegorical description of the berries themselves. The fruit, flesh, and thorns of the berry plant take on connotations of human sexuality and the inherent difficulties found both in human endeavor and in efforts to connect with nature. The poem is also pastoral, concerning itself with the relationship between the countryside, the sea, and human society.
