The Misanthrope Study Guide

The Misanthrope

The Misanthrope by Moliere

The comedic play The Misanthrope offers a critique of aristocratic French society in the 17th century. The main character, Alceste, dislikes those around him and isn't afraid to share his opinions on matters. Throughout the play, Alceste points out the hypocrisy around him. His outspokenness lands him in trouble. The marquis Oronte brings a lawsuit against Alceste after he harshly critiques Oronte's poem. He ends up alone at the end, after his love, Celimene, refuses to live a quiet and isolated life with him.
