The Chairs

The Chairs by Eugene Ionesco

Described as a tragic farce by its author, Eugene Ionesco, The Chairs is a play that shows an elderly couple, called Man and Woman, setting up chairs for guests who are arriving to hear a important speech. Although the couple continue to set up chairs throughout the play, the guests who arrive are not visible to the audience. The strange behavior of the couple, and the fact that the person who arrives to finally give the speech is both deaf and mute, points to the futility of life.
