The Woman in Black is the story of Arthur Kipps and his experience as a younger man in the town of Crythin Gifford. Working as a solicitor, Kipps became embroiled in the local legend of the Woman in Black, a ghost whose appearance foreshadowed the death of a child. Kipps investigates the mystery and discovers the origins of the Woman and her own tragic past. He later returns to London and marries, though his one natural-born child is killed by the vengeful specter.
