A Month in the Country is a 1980 novel by J. L. Carr about a World War I veteran named Tom Birkin who gets a job uncovering a mural in a village church that has been painted over. Along with another veteran working to uncover a nearby grave, Birkin spends part of the summer working and healing from his experiences at war. Though Birkin is not religious himself, the novel is rich with Christian symbolism. The novel deals with themes of loss, recovery and the codependence of happiness and sorrow.
