The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a French Gothic novel that tells the tale of Quasimodo, a deaf hunchback who rings the bells of Notre Dame cathedral. His fate becomes entangled with that of the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda when his adoptive father Frollo, the archdeacon of the church, becomes obsessed with her and orders Quasimodo to kidnap her.
