In the strange play Happy Days, an older woman, Winnie, is buried in a mound of dirt, at first up to her chest, then later up to her neck. Her partner, Willie, is behind her, just beyond the view of the audience. Although trapped in the sand, Winnie goes up with normal activities, such as brushing her teeth and trying to shield herself from the sun with a parasol. The play captures feelings of loneliness and optimism even in the face of the great void.
