Farewell to Manzanar is a memoir in which Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, a Japanese American and daughter of immigrants, tells about her family's experience being interred in a prison camp by the U.S. Government during WWII. There they forced to live in cramped structures and are plagued by food shortages, and under the stress Jeanne's family begins to fall apart. Even after leaving the camps, Jeanne faces racism and challenges fitting in normal life at school, as well as difficulties understanding her family.
