The Duchess of Malfi is the story of a noblewoman who marries beneath her station. Widowed at a young age, she marries her kind and virtuous steward in secret. Her two brothers, a corrupt cardinal and a tenuously sane nobleman, spy on her and attempt to control her life. They are enraged at this missed opportunity to advance their family's fortunes and an escalating series of blood tragedies eventually consume the lives of the entire family except for the Duchess's eldest son.
