Amadeus is a play by Peter Shaffer, first performed in 1979. The play is based on the myth of the composers Mozart and Salieri, and inspired by a play on the same myth by Alexander Pushkin. The play deals with themes of envy, betrayal and genius, telling the story of how the composer Salieri, jealous of Mozart's musical genius and success and insulted by his rudeness, eventually kills him. After pretending to be Mozart's friend while continually undermining him, Salieri poisons Mozart and attempts to commit suicide, but fails.
