Love is more..love is more than just a word, its an action, its a way of life, it is a way to describe something so fulfilling that every second is worth it. Both Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce describe actions of love that step beyond boundaries to prove that love exists.

Ernest Hemingways short story Cat in the Rain takes place in a hotel room in Italy. In the story, the lady sees a cat outside of her window crouched under a dripping wet green table, feeling sorrow for the cat, she wants to go and get it and keep it warm and safe. As the reader I began to realize that she was feeling helpless and wanted attention kind of the same way as the cat she only wanted to be loved, warm and safe. The lady proves this when she tells her husband George Im going down to get that kitty, and her husband replied no Ill get it but did not bother to get up at all, then said dont get wet, sarcastically to his wife. Symbolism in this story is shown when the lady receives the cat at the end of the story, this is symbolic because I believe that the American lady is the same as the cat where as she is looking for a place to be happy and comfortable and basically out of the rain.

Araby a very short story by James Joyce takes place in Dublin, Ireland on north Richmond street on a dead end block. James Joyce is writing in the first person and is explaining his love for his first, his friend Mangans sister. He would follow this girl to school in the morning and would never say a word to her, he would leave at the same time, trailing steps away behind her until they got to the school, then he would just walk fast past her and that made his day. At night he would go home and all he could think about was her. This happened morning after morning. I had never spoken a word to her, except a few casual words, and yet her name was like a summons to all my foolish blood.

Love proves to be more than words can describe in both stories for a variety of reasons. In the stories the main characters play somewhat similar roles, they are both chasing love.

In cat in the rain the woman is chasing love because she is chasing after the cat and looking for happiness because she is sick of being ignored by her husband. Also, many say that the cat is symbolic to the woman because she is sort of being left out in the rain by her husband, exactly like the cat is. The lady is just trying to stay dry like the cat underneath the green table. Also the lady might find love with the hotel keeper because she likes how he is willing to do basically anything for her, like tell someone to hold an umbrella for the lady while she looks for the cat outside in the pouring rain. The American woman had liked how the bookkeeper made her feel, she had a momentary feeling of supreme importance.

In Araby the young boy is chasing love because he is constantly following the girl of his dreams day after day. Now love proves to be a strong theme in both of the short stories because they are both in love just with different aspects.

In Araby the flashback narration helps us to understand the character simply because we are looking back at him, Joyce uses simple imagery such as The space of the sky above us was the color of ever-changing violet and towards it the lamps of the street lifted their feeble lanterns. That quote shows us that he is finding happiness in his surroundings; I believe that it is also safe to say that he hiding in his uncles shadow is his struggle between reality and fantasy, which is because he is so caught up with the girl that he does not realize what, is real and what does not really exist. Although. His relationship exists; the level that he is on with her does not exist.

Both of the main characters describe actions which could possibly put them over the top in terms of affection and love. One character describes his love in a rather in particular way where he is too young to fully understand the complex city of the situation. The other character expresses her love because she is unhappy with how things are going with her husband and simple things like a cat being in the rain makes her want the cat and the guy nurturing her every need makes her want the hotel keeper.

Both of these short stories prove to have love as a central idea, though different, both stories describe a simple life shown in the perspective of the writers. Both stories show that love can be found in different situations and different ways, love is something that could take time to build or it can just be realize when it is found.
