Litotes is a very popular rhetorical device in world literature Shakespeare uses it on this page to question one of the characters. He uses litotes in the very beginning of the page saying Be thou a spirit of health or goblin damnd bring with thee airs from heaven or blasts from hell, be thy intents wicked or charitable,! and asking the spirit King, father, royal Dane: O, answer me Hamlet asks in this passage simply if the ghost is evil or holy, which is also an apostrophe asking a spirit what it is or isnt when Hamlet knows it wont answer. Imagery is shown in this page with why thy canonizd bones, giving a mental image of the Kings bones in his grave. Also Horatio asks Hamlet if he tempts to approach the problem as if it is a summit of the cliff, flood, or into the sea. The canonizd bones are also an example of metonymy referring to the Kings body.

Shakespeare uses many rhetorical devices to delineate the most important subject of matter. He gives depth to characters that most authors dont show through words. The character development for Hamlet is strictly important seeing that he is the main character. On this certain page it shows that I do not set my life at a pins fee, or in other words, he doesnt care about his life and also being a thing immortal as itself, saying his soul is immortal which also shows that even though he doesnt care about his life he still views himself as almost God-like. In only one page it shows a major impact of character development for Hamlet giving readers an idea of who he really is, a typical young man who says he is worthless but still views himself as some sort of God.

Throughout the page there is major character development for Hamlet showing a slight glance at his true personality. In the beginning he is confused trying to figure out who the spirit is, if its holy or evil, and why it is even there. This shows Hamlets childlike side, hes scared but like a child he wants to follow and find out what this ghost truly is. Hes prying at what he knows is something unknown and just brushes off Horatio and Marcelluss suggestions of staying or at least letting them come along as well. Close to the end of the passage Hamlet explains that he doesnt care about life, yet he looks at himself as an immortal figure as any other man would. This explains that Hamlet is still a young man physically and mentally. Shakespeares purpose on this page is to show the audience the character development of Hamlet by showing his intake on himself and the ghost showing that Hamlet is a young male, independent, careless, confident, and suspicious.
