Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay

In the novel of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain was written in the era of pre-civil war, therefore a lot of adventures is present which is full of fun, sadness, and drama. When people read the novel most likely they would discover many themes. The main characters Huck and Jim have a big role in this novel as well their big adventure. Therefore in the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain reveals to us the themes of friendship, morality, and race.

First of all in the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain describes the theme of friendship, the developing friendship between a white boy (Huck) and a black slave (Jim) is the main driving force of this novel. According to Huck, Well, we got to save him, haint we? Of course. Well then, we wont blow on them. (pg 183) This quote is important because it is essential information that Huck wants to save Jim from the king and duke. This example shows to us how Huck feels about Jim. Also how he wouldnt leave Jim alone on his own by being a slave to the king and the duke. In addition to this theme Huck also states Well I warnt long making him understand I warnt dead. I was ever glad to see Jim. I warnt lonesome now (pg 49) This quote is important because it is a key detail that indicates the feelings of Huck when he sees Jim at the beginning of his trip. It reveals to us that Jim fills a void in Hucks life by providing him with companionship in their adventures. In conclusion Twain examines the theme of friendship to show us that friendship makes Hucks decision of whether to help Jim escape slavery so difficult. And that Huck makes several comments throughout the book that let us know how seriously he takes his friendships.

Furthermore, throughout the novel one discovers another theme that is presented in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, it introduces the theme of morality between the right and wrong decisions Huck makes in the novel. According to Huck Ill right then Ill go to hell-and tore it up. (pg 207) This quote is important because it demonstrates a powerful example that shows morality because he has to choose between two sides. Huck has to take a decision of either telling Ms.Watson where Jim is at or helping free Jim. This quote also reveals to us the climax of the story. Another quote that also shows morality is when Huck states Mornings before daylight I slipped into cornfields and borrowed a watermelon, or a mushroom, or things of that kind. Pap always said it warnt no harm to borrow things if you was meaning to pay them back some time; but the widow said it warnt anything but a soft stealing (pg. 70) This quote is important because it is essential information that shows that Huck struggles to find his own balance between the different systems of morality he sees around him.. He has to deal with the strict law and approval of society of either use what the widow has taught him as well as the rules of survival that hes picked up from his dad. Overall the theme of morality is important because it shows the importance that he is forced to reconcile his personal feelings of friendship for an escaped slave with what society has told him is "right," Huck learns through the course of the story to trust his moral instincts.

Lastly, one sees the theme of racism between blacks and whites in this story. Huck states,It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go humble myself to a nigger; but done it and I warnt ever sorry for it afterward. (pg 89) This quote is important because despite the racist environment in which he lives, Huck recognizes Jims human qualities. It takes a while for him to fully respect how awesome Jim really is. A person that wants to capture Jim directly says, "Well, I RECKON! There's two hunderd dollars reward on him. It's like picking up money out'n the road. (pg 204) This quote is illustrating that Jim is repeatedly described according his monetary value rather than his personal characteristics. This example also supports the link between the whites and the blacks. Nobody in this era cared about the black peoples feelings. Although Huck has a different thought in which that is what makes him want to help Jim out in making him a free man once again. Finally what this book is mostly focusing on is the issues about race but on the other hand Twain puts in positive effects so it wont seem bad.

In conclusion in the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain reveals to us the themes of friendship, morality, and race. Once people have the read the novel they had already discovered the importance of these themes presented in the novel. The adventures of Huck and Jim point out a lot of things such as the friendship between them two, and the decision Hucks needs to make between right and wrong.
