This is a remarkable work of contemporary literature that quickly gets inside the readers head, then heart. The book starts out as a little boys struggle with abandonment but quickly becomes the readers own struggle with universal themes of loneliness, fear, rejection, bitterness, and how to forgive others and ourselves. This quote by Dotty Hoots is outstanding. She is warning the reader about the book Castaway Kid written by R.B. Mitchell that consumes the reader, causing him to not put it down. This is a captivating story about a little boy, named Robby, who growing not only in age but emotionally. He experiences many difficult times, but when he finds God everything changes. three of the main struggles that Robby endures are loneliness, fear, and also forgiveness.

At age three Robby was given to an orphanage; he spent many days and nights alone crying himself to sleep with the feeling of loneliness. This loneliness plays a big role throughout his life. Even though his grandmother Gigi, visits the orphanage every weekend Robby still has not been convinced that somebody wants him. He thinks that Gigi doesnt really want him because she never adopts him or takes him home to live with her. Robby is too young to understand the circumstances of why Gigi can not take him to live with her. It kills Robby inside to hear Gigi say, Robby, darling, you are my precious grandson. Im sorry I cant keep you with me. Im sorry your parents are too sick to keep you. Keep my live in your heart. It will always be there. Even though Gigi tries to show Robby how much she truly loves him its not enough to take away Robbys loneliness. He still has the feeling that he will be alone forever; he thinks that if no one wants to take him in now why would they ever want to take him in.

Fear. It can consume a mind. With Robby the reader knows this is true. Robby had struggled with many fears growing up. One was that he would end up crazy like his parents, another that he would not be smart and be very poor when he has to leave the childrens home. The reader can also see Robbys fear when he is thinking about marring Susan. Robby says, Can this be true? Have I really found a good woman who can accept me in spite of my parents mental illnesses and my strange childhood? He is afraid that he will not be good enough for her, or be able to provide for her, or that he might be a horrible father and husband. Even though it took many years Robby finally overcame some of the fears he had about making a commitment to another person.

Throughout Robbys life he is hurt by many people. Three of which he needs to forgive so he can have peace and move on. Forgiving these people is hard for Robby. It takes him a while to accomplish his tasks. First he forgives grandmother Pauline. She was hard to forgive but not extremely hard. The next person that he forgives is his father for leaving him and his mother and for causing him so much emotional pain. Lastly he needs to forgive his mother, Joyce. She continually caused him pain throughout his life. It comes to the point of him not even wanting to ever see her, ever talk to her, or ever hear about her again. When she dies he is not sad and doesnt shed a single tear. Rob says, I wasnt happy that she was gone but it wasnt sad either. She defiantly was the most difficult for Robby to forgive, and it took a while for it actually to happen. In the end he did forgive his mother and move on; it was what was best for him so he could have peace. Castaway Kid by R.B. Mitchell is an outstanding novel. It captured the readers attention causing the reader to want to read more and more. Also it shoes three main struggles of a little boy named Robby. These struggles fear, loneliness, and forgiveness are universal themes. In the end Robby conquered all of them, which to his surprise made him the great person he grew up to be. But the question is, who do you need to forgive?
