The Crucible Topic One

The Crucible is an intriguing play based on the Salem Witch Trial which occur in 1692. The play was written by Arthur Miller in 1953. The word crucible meaning a severe test. One of the character is Elizabeth Proctor shes John Proctors wife. She turns cold torward her husband when she discovered about his affair with Abigail. Reverend Hale was first introduce in the play when he was called to Salem to examine Parriss daughter Betty. Hes a young minister and an expert in witchcraft. John Proctor is a farmer who lives outside of the town. Hes Elizabeths husband. The term insight means a clear understanding of a complex situation.

Elizabeth Proctor is a good women but she turns cold torward her husband after she discovered that her husband was having an affair with Abigail. Elizabeth changes many times during the story. When she said John, if it were not Abigail that you must go to hurt, would you falter now? I think not (pg. 851). Shes is saying that she will never forgive John for having an affair with Abigail . When Elizabeth was arrested she said , Oh John, bring me home soon! She is trusting John to get her out of jail (pg. 861). At the end of act VI Elizabeth said He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him!(pg. 887). She should have forgive John for adultery and should of shown mercy to him. She didnt want to take away his glory in the end by letting him hang.

Reverend Hale was called to Salem to investigate witchcraft and to examine Parriss daughter. He wants to get rid of the devil in Salem and be the savior of the town (pg. 848). When Hale discovered that Abigail and the girls were lying he try to convince Danforth to stop before another person is condemned. He realized that the people accuse their neighbors for revenge and that he cant do anything about it. (pg. 876)

John Proctor regretted of having an affair with Abigail. He believed that his words isnt taken seriously because his good name has been tainted with adultery (pg. 852). John believe that Elizabeth is always judging him (pg. 852). When John admit adultery to the whole town to save his wife (pg. 874). He realize that his name is not worth a life. In the end of the story John rips of the confession paper so that he would ruin his childrens name. He would rather die than ruin his childrens life.

Elizabeth finally realize that she shouldnt have judge her husband. Reverend Hale realized that the girls were lying and accuse people for vengeance. John realize that his name is not worth a life. John Proctor is the most important character because hes the person who made the witch trial possible by having an affair with Abigail. Another reason is that he tried to save everyone from being accused.
