In this essay I am going to compare and contrast Shirley Jacksons story The Lottery to the actual lottery played every day by millions of people. In the lottery all over the world people get lucky and win huge amounts of money. However, in Shirley Jacksons The Lottery, the citizens of the town arent so lucky.

In The Lottery, on one certain day every year, every one in the town gathers for that annual lottery. The annual lottery is when the man of each household draws a slip of paper out of a box. There is one slip of paper that has a black dot on it while the others are blank. The man with the black dot must gather his family and they must repeat the process over. Whoever draws the black dot, whether it be the wife or the children, must be stoned to death by every one else.

Although sharing the same name the actually lottery that is played by millions of people is more luck than it is bad luck. The lottery is played every day instead of annually, people volunteer to participate in the lottery, and no one is forced to die or kill anyone.

Both lotteries are based upon luck. If you get lucky in one you win millions of dollars if you get lucky in the other you dont get stoned to death. Personally, I would chose to play in the lottery instead of being in the unfortunate town that hold the annual lottery.
