To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Tom Robinson was convicted guilty for rapping Mayella Ewell. At the beginning of the book Scout and Jem are immature. As time goes on Both Jem and Scout start to mature. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the author show that over time and greater understanding people become more mature.

At the beginning of the book Scout and Jem show signs of immaturity. Scout is immature when she beats up Walter Cunningham for no reason. He didnt have any lunch (pg 13). When scout says he didnt have any lunch was his excuse for beating up Walter Cunningham. Jem shows that he is immature by describing what he thought boo Radley looked like. He has a long jagged scar that ran across his face, what teeth what he had were yellow and rotten, his popped and he drooled most of the time (pg.13). Jem and scout were both immature over the first part of the book.

Over time Scout starts to mature over time. One sign of scout starting to mature is when she understands why atticus invited everybody on the dark porch. I wondered why atticus was inviting us to the front porch then I understood.(pg.271) Another sign of scout maturing is when she starts to realizes that they are the only people in the town that wants to help Tom Robinson. Who in this town did anything to help Tom Robinson, just who will. Scout with a greater understanding is more mature.

In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the author shows that as people grow older they become more mature. Jem and Scout both show signs of immaturity and they both start to mature over time in the book. The topic of this paper is important because its one of the main themes of the book.
