Washington Square is a novel by Henry James about the Catherine, the daughter of Dr. Austin Sloper, who, against her father's wishes, wants to marry Morris Townsend. Fearing that Morris is marrying her for money, Dr. Sloper refuses to give his blessing and takes Catherine on a world tour. Catherine refuses to call off the engagement, but Morris soon leaves her and Catherine never marries. The novel features a conflict of loyalties and themes of love and betrayal.
