Lucy is a novel about a young woman, Lucy, who leaves her home in the West Indies for America. Although she felt little nostalgia for her homeland, Lucy becomes disillusioned with America as she struggles with her mother and her boss Mariah's attempts to control her. In her quest for independence, Lucy abandons the values of commitment like her mother had for her adulterer father and engages in numerous loveless relationships. In the end she cuts off communication with her mother after her father dies and is alone and unfulfilled.
