Johnny Got His Gun is a novel about Joe Bonham, a soldier fighting in World War I. Joe wakes up in a hospital after being blasted by an artillery shell and realizes he has no arms, legs or face. After attempting suicide by suffocation, Joe communicates in Morse code by banging his head, informing military officials that he wants to tour the country in a glass box as a testimony to the reality of war. He knows this will not happen and reflects on the horrors of war.
