Innocent Blood is a mystery novel following teenage protagonist Philippa Palfrey. Discovering that she is adopted, Philippa learns that her birth father was a murderer and a rapist. Her birth mother, Mary, is in prison for her own involvement in the case and Philippa feels drawn toward a reunion. The two women talk about the murder, coming to an uneasy understanding, but the father of the victim of the long-ago crime takes revenge on Mary, killing her. Philippa takes her mother's name, Ducat, as penance.
