The Government Inspector is a play by the Russian writer Nikolai Gogol about an opportunistic man who is mistaken for a government inspector in a provincial Russian town. The town officials get wind that an inspector will be coming to their town incognito. When the irresponsible dandy, Khlestikov arrives, they believe him to be the inspector and treat him with great respect. Khlestikov takes bribes, flirts with the mayor's wife and daughter and escaping shortly before the real inspector arrives. The play is a humorous satire of Russian life.
