Its hero, the doctor Thomas Stockmann, attempts during the play's course to convince his Norwegian hometown to pursue an expensive solution to their dangerously contaminated baths, the source of much tourism revenue. While Stockmann had universal support in the creation of the baths, his erstwhile supporters turn on him when the town's financial wellbeing is threatened. The play is a sharp critique of Victorian morality and the idea of consensus-based correctness.
