Doctor Faustus, a play by Christopher Marlowe, tells the tale of a supremely intelligent man who teaches himself necromancy and summons the devil to his chambers. It is there where he makes a deal with Lucifer, in which he will be given a devil named Mephistophilis as his personal servent, and given ultimate power on Earth. In exchange, he gives Lucifer his soul and is damned to Hell for all eternity.
