Brown Girl, Brownstones is the story of Selina Boyce and her impoverished family, immigrants from Barbados to the United States. Arriving during the Great Depression and living through World War II, the Boyces are subjected to the extremes of mid-century racism in America. Selina faces systematic oppression and many pressures that conspire to disrupt her family life. Her father becomes a victim of a predatory cult and she is struck with intense antipathy toward her own people. Eventually she reconciles to her identity and returns to the Caribbean.
