Set in 1950s New York, The Assistant is the story of Morris Bober, a Jewish immigrant to America. Morris owns a failing grocery store which he operates along with his daughter Helen. A young drifter comes into their lives as the eponymous assistant, an Italian American man named Frank. Frank and Morris develop a deep but complicated relationship further tangled by Frank's affection for Helen. Frank eventually takes over the store after Morris's death.
