Across Five Aprils is the story of the Mossing family, farmers of little means whose lives are torn apart by the outbreak of the Civil War. Jethro Mossing is the family's youngest son, and he must cope with local unrest and internal turmoil as two of his brothers join the Union forces while the third, Bill, fights for the Confederacy. The novel explores themes of loyalty to government, region, and family.
