The namesake book and the movie differences

I read the book first, which made me understand the movie better. I could enjoy the movie without reading the book, but the novel gives a deeper dimension to the characters.

When I watched the movie, I noticed that there were a lot of things missing from the book which means some of things were on the book, they were not on the movie. For example, in the movie where they live is in New York City, but the book said they lived in Boston since they moved to America. In the movie Gogol shaved his head when his father died, but in the book Gogol didnt shave his head. And, also the movie is 1977, but the book is 1968. Gogol went to elementary school and then jumps in to his senior year without explaining why he doesnt want to be part of his familys culture while growing up. The movie doesnt show that when Gogol changes his name, we dont see that when he goes to the court room and having conversion with the Judge, but the book said Gogol went to the court room and changed his name. In the movie Moushima didnt buy the hat and scarf to Gogol, but the book said Moushima bought him scarf and hat. The book explains that Gogol wants to be more part of American culture than Indian culture. The book said Mr. Ashoke tried to explain to his son Gogol, the name that he picked for him when he was a baby. However, in the movie didnt show anything about why he picked the name Gogol but they had a father and son conversation in some part of the movie. Graham, Ruth, and Bridge were not on the movie.

In my opinion that the movie is a good adaptation because it shows a great image and clear understanding about the book.
